Introduction

The aging population are the most vulnerable population when it relates to being diagnosed with chronic diseases such as hypertension and heart disease. With that being said, that puts them in the category of leading cause of death. Because the aging population are more likely to have co-morbidities, their heart health is most commonly diminished. Considering the factors, they are less likely to respond to treatment due the impact their other health issues have on them.Reducing heart disease prevalence in the aging population can be combated with the use of patient-centered goals. Allowing the aging population the opportunity to remain independent and aiming to reduce their symptoms can improve quality of life. Improving outcomes for the aging population living with or diagnosed with hypertension and heart disease can be achieved with better treatment options. Health Issues for the Aging Currently in the United States, the number of elderly people that are over the age of 75 have hypertension and this same population have disability from cardiovascular disease. Another estimation related to the aging population is those 65 years old and older living is expected to be 98 million by 2060. According to Henderson, Maniam, and Leavell (2017)“This older population is set to reduce the overall workforce and its productivity, increasing pressure on programs such as Medicare and Social Security, and in turn, generating added strain on the working age sector of the population”(p. 153). Treating this population has presented immense challenges for the healthcare system sue to the fact that cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death for this group.
